Dynamic Email with User Generated Content
I conceptualized, designed, and managed other designers for this project that I proposed for the 2018 TCS NYC Marathon and carried out through the other 2 largest events NYRR organizes each year. I created a templated system and instructed fellow designers to replicate for similar races. Completion of this project required constant coordination and creative input for the in-house developers as well as a third-party production agency.
Each racer has a bib that is tracked at every 5 Kilometers, which is then compiled into a spreadsheet and given to the runner at the end of each race. When asked how we can better display this data, I proposed a responsive email that not only shows the runner’s finish time, pace, and fastest 5k segment, but also includes a custom pace map that will display each 5k segment and where the runner was faster or slower than their average pace.
This dynamic tool helped hundreds of thousands of runners understand what parts of the course they were fastest and which parts they need to work on next time, providing a feature that is yet to be done by any of the competitors in the global marathon industry (the Abbott World Marathon Majors).
The email was optimized to:
– utilize GIF headers without overloading the inbox
– provide the best screenshots to be shared on mobile while still including race logos, most important data, etc.
– easily export a pre-generated screenshot to Instagram and Facebook
– include a failsafe animation that shows the course (as seen at the top of the page) in case the user has an error in their data that doesn’t display a full pace map
